A visit to the Galapagos Islands has something to offer inquisitive travelers. With its colorful, rocky terrain, unique opportunities to interact with animal inhabitants, and beautiful natural setting, it is a one-of-a-kind vacation experience that you will not soon forget. Here are a few reasons to consider a visit.
1. The Wildlife
If you are looking for a vacation where you can observe wildlife in its natural habitat, then this may be the perfect spot for you. Home to a wide variety of mammals, birds and reptiles, the islands offer guests the opportunity to connect with nature on a whole new level.
2. Volcanoes
If you have even the most remote interest in viewing a volcano up close and personal, you will be pleasantly pleased with the opportunities that await you here. The 13 islands that make up the Galapagos were formed by volcanoes long ago and are still one of the most active hot spots in the world. There are several agencies that offer guided tours, but opportunities to trek and explore them on your own exist as well. Bare in mind though that the guided tours do offer the opportunity to learn more about the volcanic history of the islands.
3. Adaptation/Species and History of the Natural World
It was the early part of the 1800s when Charles Darwin visited the Islands and developed his idea of evolution. It was the diverse range of species here that led Darwin to consider his theory and many of the species that he encountered on his trip still inhabit the island.
4. The Blue-footed Booby
Perhaps one of the most iconic inhabitants of the island, the Blue-footed Booby offers a unique interaction for visitors. The male bird of the species uses his beautiful sky-blue feet to attract the females for mating. The ritual, which includes whistles and stomping, resembles a carefully choreographed dance performance.
5. Snorkeling
Sharks, stingrays, sea turtles and dolphins are just a few of the underwater wildlife that can be found around the islands. Most of the wildlife life swim slightly below the surface, which means that you do not have to be an experienced deep sea diver to enjoy the experience of swimming with them. There are guided tours available for those who are new to the idea of snorkeling or you can venture out on your own as well.
